Syria's Seed Bank Survived War, Now A Beacon In The Expanding Global Food Crisis The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) evacuated from Aleppo, Syria, in 2015, to Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. Though originally it aimed to help the world’s impoverished farmers, it has expanded to larger farms that can help breed plants resistant to climate change. 📸🎥: marwan.tahtah 🎵: Where The Thistle Grows – Bonnie Grace / epidemicsound 💻: katharinelotze #GettyImagesNews #ICARDA #SeedBank #Lebanon #ClimateChange #Farming #Agriculture

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Anna May Wong Today we celebrate American actress Anna May Wong, born on January 3, 1905, in Los Angeles. In the 1920s and 1930s, she became the first Chinese American movie star to gain international recognition. Wong relocated to Europe in 1928 to escape the stereotypical supporting roles she reluctantly played in Hollywood. In Europe, she became a sensation, starring in notable films and gaining prestige that led to a starring role on Broadway. Back in the US she starred in several movies for Paramount Pictures in the late 1930s portraying Chinese and Chinese Americans in a positive light. She used her newfound celebrity to make political statements, advocating for Chinese American causes and criticizing negative stereotyping in films. In 1951, she made history with her television show The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong, the first-ever U.S. television show starring an Asian American. Wong's career left a notable legacy, helping humanize Chinese Americans to mainstream American audiences during a period of intense racism and discrimination. Wong's films and public image established her as a Chinese American citizen at a time when laws discriminated against Chinese immigration and citizenship. Wong's hybrid image dispelled contemporary notions that the East and West were inherently different. The importance of Wong's legacy within the Asian American film community can be seen in the Anna May Wong Award of Excellence, which is given yearly at the Asian American Arts Awards. In 2021, the United States Mint announced that Wong would be among the first women depicted on the reverse of the quarter as a part of the American Women quarters series. She will be the first Asian American to appear on US currency. This month we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage by honoring Anna May Wong for her many achievements. 📷: Bettmann l Pictures from History l Silver Screen Collection l John Kobal Foundation l  John Springer Collection/CORBIS/Corbis  🎥: Archive Films 🎬💻: Jana Winfield 🎵: Stocked by Damma Beatz epidemicsound

Protests have broken out in the Philippines in response to the results of the country’s presidential election. Preliminary results show Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. with a lead against main rival Vice President Leni Robredo in a hotly contested election marred by several incidents of violence and numerous complaints of faulty vote counting machines. Marcos, the son and namesake of ousted dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. who was accused and charged of amassing billions of dollars of ill-gotten wealth as well as committing tens of thousands of human rights abuses during his autocratic rule, mounted a hugely popular campaign based largely on disinformation to return his family name to power. Also poised to win the vice presidency is Mayor Sara Duterte of Davao City, the daughter of outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte who is the subject of an international investigation for alleged human rights violations during his war on drugs. I #GettyImagesNews 📷🎥: Ezra Acayan ezra_acayan + Lauren DeCicca deciccaphoto 🎵: By Lake Surprise by Peter Sandberg 💻: Sarah Morris sarahleemorris

Ukraine's Railway Plays Essential Part In The War Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began, the Ukrainian railway played an important role in the conflict providing a crucial means of military support and civilian escape. Trains remain a symbol of defiance as they continue to run despite Russian military efforts to disable the rail network, which is one of the largest in the world. 📸🎥: Alexey Furman/alexeyfurman Chris McGrath/ cmcgrath_photo Christopher Furlong/ christopherfurlong Dan Kitwood/ dan_kitwood Fadel Senna/AFP fadelsenna Janos Kummer / woewow Jason N.
